You as foster parents make a difference to these youngsters!

You can really made a difference to these youngsters and the people surrounding them. Young refugees need safety, warmth and attention from a family or relatives. That is why we in the Netherlands prefer to receive unaccompanied minor refugees (UMRs) in foster families. We are looking for families and adults who are prepared to take children into their homes for s short period or longer time in order to guide and care for them.

You as a foster parent can assume the care for an unaccompanied minor refugee in two ways:

You can be a bridge family

As a bridge family you will receive (in consultation) 1 or more youngsters for a few days to a maximum of 3 weeks, until a definite placement has been found.

You can be a pool family

As a pool family you receive a UMV during the time that the youngster is in the process of obtaining the residence permit. This reception lasts at least a few months until the permit has been issued and family reunification takes place, or the youngster is going to start living independently because he or she is 18+.

Your background:

  • Do you or your parents have a migration background?
  • Is your family composed of a combination of cultural backgrounds?
  • Do you have prolonged experience with living in a different cultural environment?

Your situation:

  • You are interested in caring for children between the ages of 12 and 15
  • You are over 21 years old
  • You have lived in the Netherlands for 2 or more years
  • You have an extra room available
